Refrigerator Making Noise? Here’s What’s Normal and What’s Not
Refrigerators make more noise than people expect once they start actually listening for it. Most of what you’ll hear is completely normal. Here’s how to tell the difference between ordinary operating sounds and something worth having looked at.
Normal Sounds You Can Ignore
- A low hum — the compressor running, present in virtually every fridge
- Clicking when the compressor starts or stops — normal cycling behavior
- Gurgling or hissing — refrigerant moving through the lines, normal during and after the compressor cycles
- A brief buzz from the ice maker filling — normal if you have an ice maker
Sounds Worth Paying Attention To
A Loud Buzzing or Rattling
Often means something is loose or vibrating against another surface — sometimes as simple as items on top of the fridge, sometimes a genuine loose component inside.
A High-Pitched Squeal
Frequently points to a fan — either the evaporator fan or condenser fan — struggling or partially obstructed by ice buildup or debris.
Banging or Knocking
Can indicate a fan blade hitting ice buildup, or in some cases a compressor issue. This one is worth a closer look rather than waiting out.
A Loud Clunk When the Compressor Starts
Occasional and brief is often fine. Frequent or worsening clunking can signal a compressor mount or internal component issue.
The Simple Test
Ask yourself: is this a sound the fridge has always made, or is this new? A consistent hum you’ve heard for years is background noise. A new sound that wasn’t there last month is worth checking, even if the fridge is still cooling normally for now.
