Why Is My Dryer Taking Forever to Dry Clothes? 5 Common Causes

A dryer that runs but leaves clothes damp after a full cycle — or takes two or three cycles to actually dry a load — is one of the more common calls we get in Abilene. Here are the five causes we see most often, roughly in order of likelihood.

1. A Clogged Lint Trap or Vent

This is the most common cause by far. A lint trap that isn’t cleaned every load, or a vent line with built-up lint restricting airflow, chokes off the hot air the dryer needs to actually dry clothes. Clean the trap before every load and check the outside vent flap for real airflow while running.

2. Overloading the Dryer

A dryer packed too full can’t circulate air properly around the clothes, which means longer dry times even with everything else working correctly. If you’ve started drying noticeably larger loads than you used to, that alone can explain slower drying.

3. A Failing Heating Element

If the dryer runs and tumbles normally but never gets properly hot, the heating element itself may be weakening or has partially failed. This tends to show up as a gradual decline rather than a sudden stop.

4. A Faulty Thermostat or Sensor

Dryers use temperature sensors to regulate heat and determine when a load is actually dry. A sensor reading incorrectly can cause the dryer to shut off heat too early or run inefficiently, leaving clothes damp even though the cycle completed.

5. A Slipping or Worn Belt

If the drum isn’t turning at full speed, clothes won’t tumble properly through the hot airflow, which slows drying even if the heating element is working fine. This often comes with a noticeable noise change during the cycle.
