Electric Stove Burner Not Heating? What to Check
An electric stove burner that won’t heat is a different problem than a gas burner issue — no igniter or gas valve involved, just the burner element and its connection. Here’s what usually causes it.
A Failed Burner Element
The most common cause. Electric burner elements wear out over time and eventually stop heating entirely, even though the stove itself has power.
A Loose or Damaged Connection
The burner plugs into a receptacle underneath the cooktop. A loose or corroded connection can prevent power from reaching the element even though the element itself is fine.
A Faulty Infinite Switch
This is the control dial that regulates how much power reaches the burner. When it fails, the burner may not heat at all, or may only work on certain settings.
A Simple First Test
If you have multiple burners, swap the non-working element with one from a working burner (many electric stoves use interchangeable elements). If the problem follows the element, it’s the element itself. If the same burner position still doesn’t work with a different element, the issue is the connection or switch instead.
Is This Safe to Test Myself?
Swapping elements between burners (with the stove unplugged or breaker off) is generally safe and genuinely useful for diagnosis. Testing the connection or infinite switch directly involves exposed electrical components and is better left to a professional.
When It’s a Quick, Affordable Fix
A failed burner element is usually one of the more affordable stove repairs — the part itself is inexpensive and straightforward to replace once confirmed as the actual cause.
