A more expensive repair on a relatively young appliance can still be the right call, since you’re protecting a longer remaining lifespan.

• Refrigerators: roughly 10-15 years
• Washers and dryers: roughly 10-13 years
• Dishwashers: roughly 9-12 years
• Ranges and ovens: roughly 13-18 years, often longer for gas models

Where the Rule Can Mislead You

A repair estimate under half of replacement cost doesn’t automatically mean repair is smart if the appliance has a history of repeat failures. Recurring problems on the same unit are a signal the 50/50 math doesn’t fully capture — worth factoring in separately.
